SMT Feeder Operations and Management
Loading Surface Mount Technology (SMT) components into feeders is a precision process that ensures consistent part delivery to the pick-and-place machine. Feeder and Material Selection: Select the correct feeder based on the component's tape width (e.g., 8mm, 12mm, 16mm) and pitch. Ensure the component reel is oriented so the tape pulls from the top toward the machine. Tape Preparation and Alignment: Open the feeder cover and feed the component tape into the front housing, carefully aligning the tape's sprocket drive holes with the feeder's internal sprocket pins. Cover Tape Peeling: Peel back a small section of the clear cover tape to reveal the first component. Thread this cover tape through the feeder's guide rail and into the tensioning or peeling mechanism, which separates the film from the carrier tape during operation. Tensioning and Indexing: Secure the cover tape to the waste take-up reel or tensioning gears to ensure it peels back consistently. Manually advance the feeder to verify the sprocket is engaged and the first component is correctly positioned in the "pick" window. Station Installation: Slide the loaded feeder into its assigned slot on the SMT station's base, ensuring it is flush with the mounting plate. Lock the feeder into place using the handle or latch and connect any necessary control leads.
Learning Objectives
- Selection: Match the feeder width and pitch to the specific component reel specifications.
- Alignment: Engage the tape's sprocket holes precisely with the feeder’s drive pins.
- Threading: Guide the cover tape through the peeling mechanism to ensure smooth film removal.
- Indexing: Manually advance the tape to verify the component sits perfectly in the pick window.
- Mounting: Secure the feeder into its designated station slot and lock the interface latch.
