Feeder Selection and Component Preparation
Lesson Content
SMT Feeder Operations and Management Feeder Matching: Select feeders based on tape width (e.g., 8mm, 12mm, 16mm) and pitch (e.g., 2mm, 4mm) to ensure parts align with the machine's pickup head. Reel Inspection: Verify the component reel's orientation to ensure the tape pulls from the top toward the machine interface. Material Verification: Cross-reference the material code on the reel with the machine's station table or feeder list to prevent loading incorrect parts. Lesson 2: Tape Loading and Alignment Sprocket Engagement: Align the tape’s sprocket drive holes precisely with the feeder’s internal drive pins to prevent indexing errors. Tape Feeding: Thread the component tape through the feeder’s guide rail and into the front housing until it is flush with the pick-up window. Cover Tape Peeling: Manually peel back the clear film and thread it into the tensioning or peeling mechanism. Lesson 3: Advanced Threading and Tensioning Leader Extensions: Use leader tape extenders for short reels to minimize component waste and reach the tensioning gears. Waste Management: Thread the peeled cover tape through the waste exit (for larger feeders) or onto the take-up reel. Tension Calibration: Adjust tension so it is firm enough to peel the film but not so tight that it tears the tape or shifts components. Lesson 4: Station Mounting and Software Sync Physical Locking: Slide the feeder into its assigned slot on the SMT station and secure it using the locking handle or latch. Data Entry: Input the component's size, type, and specific feeder location into the pick-and-place software to sync coordinates. Verification Run: Perform a manual "step" or "index" to confirm the first component is centered in the pick window. Lesson 5: Maintenance and Troubleshooting Routine Cleaning: Use Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) and a soft brush to remove adhesive buildup from the tape path and sensors. Mechanical Checks: Inspect gears and sprockets for wear monthly; worn drive pins are a leading cause of pickup inaccuracies. Jam Resolution: If a jam occurs, stop the machine immediately, gently remove the jammed tape, and check for sprocket misalignment before restarting.
